چکیده

We determine the elastic moduli of two-dimensional assemblies of disks by computer simulations. The disks interact through elastic contact forces, that oppose the relative displacement at the contact points by means of a normal and a tangential stiffness, both taken constant. Our simulations confirm that the uniform strain assumption results in inaccurate predictions of the elastic moduli, since large fluctuations in particle displacements and rotations occur. We phrase their contribution in terms of the relative displacement they induce at the contact points. We show that the fluctuations that determine the equivalent continuum behavior depend on the average geometry of the assembly. We further separate the contributions from the center displacement and the particle rotation. The fluctuations result in a relaxation of the system, but along the tangential direction the relaxation is generally entirely due to rotations. We consider two theoretical formulations for predicting the elastic moduli that include the fluctuations, namely the “pair-fluctuation” and the “particle-fluctuation” method. They are both based on the equilibrium of a small subassembly, which is considered representative of the average structure. We investigate the

On the elastic moduli of three-dimensional assemblies of spheres: characterization and modeling of fluctuations in the particle displacement and rotation

The elastic moduli of four numerical random isotropic packings of Hertzian spheres are studied. The four samples are assembled with different preparation procedures, two of which aim to reproduce experimental compaction by vibration and lubrication. The mechanical properties of the samples are found to change with the preparation history, and to depend much more on coordination number than on d...

Magneto-Thermo-Elastic Stresses and Perturbation of Magnetic Field Vector in a Thin Functionally Graded Rotating Disk

In this paper, a semi-analytical solution for magneto-thermo-elastic problem in an axisymmetric functionally graded (FG) hollow rotating disk with constant thickness placed in uniform magnetic and thermal fields with heat convection from disk’s surfaces is presented. Solution for stresses and perturbation of magnetic field vector in a thin FG rotating disk is determined using infinitesimal theo...

Kinematic Mapping and Forward Kinematic Problem of a 5-DOF (3T2R) Parallel Mechanism with Identical Limb Structures

The main objective of this paper is to study the Euclidean displacement of a 5-DOF parallel mechanism performing three translation and two independent rotations with identical limb structures-recently revealed by performing the type synthesis-in a higher dimensional projective space, rather than relying on classical recipes, such as Cartesian coordinates and Euler angles. In this paper, Study's...

Elastic analysis of Shrink-fitted Thick FGM Cylinders Based on Linear Plane Elasticity Theory

Nowadays, functionally graded materials (FGM) are widely used in many industrial, aerospace and military fields. On the other hand, the interest in the use of shrink-fitted assemblies is increasing for designing composite tubes, high-pressure vessels, rectors and tanks. Although extensive researches exist on thick-walled cylindrical shells, not many researches have been done on shrink-fitted th...

Static Analysis of Functionally Graded Annular Plate Resting on Elastic Foundation Subject to an Axisymmetric Transverse Load Based on the Three Dimensional Theory of Elasticity

In this paper, static analysis of functionally graded annular plate resting on elastic foundation with various boundary conditions is carried out by using a semi-‍analytical approach‍ (SSM‍-DQM). The differential governing equations are presented based on the three dimensional theory of elasticity. The plate is assumed isotropic at any point, while material properties to vary exponentially thro...
